Just a short distance from the historic center of Acireale lies a completely different world: the Timpa Nature Reserve, a green paradise that plunges into the blue of the sea.
This extraordinary volcanic promontory, shaped by ancient eruptions of Mount Etna, is a maze of extinct craters, lava rocks, fragrant citrus groves, and panoramic trails offering breathtaking views of the eastern Sicilian coastline.
The most famous trail is Sentiero delle Chiazzette, an ancient mule track that descends from the center of Acireale to the seaside village of Santa Maria la Scala. Along the way, the panorama opens up to the sea, and the scent of citrus mingles with the sea breeze. In spring, nature bursts into color and sound: blooming brooms, prickly pears, and swallows gliding between the rocks. In summer, the descent toward the sea becomes a sensory experience, filled with light, wind, and silence.
Once you reach Santa Maria la Scala, the village welcomes visitors with its small harbor, fishermen’s houses, and restaurants serving the freshest fish. From the little square, you can admire the entire black cliff of La Timpa, which turns golden at sunset—truly a natural spectacle.
